As a scientist, he was a major figure in the American Enlightenment and the history of physics for his studies of electricity, and for charting and naming the current still known as the Gulf Stream. As an inventor, he is known for the lightning rod, bifocals, and the Franklin stove, among others. He founded many civic organizations, including the Library Company, Philadelphia’s first fire department, and the University of Pennsylvania. Franklin earned the title of “The First American” for his early and indefatigable campaigning for colonial unity, and as an author and spokesman in London for several colonies. As the first United States ambassador to France, he exemplified the emerging American nation. Franklin was foundational in defining the American ethos as a marriage of the practical values of thrift, hard work, education, community spirit, self-governing institutions, and opposition to authoritarianism both political and religious, with the scientific and tolerant values of the Enlightenment. In the words of historian Henry Steele Commager, “In Franklin could be merged the virtues of Puritanism without its defects, the illumination of the Enlightenment without its heat.” Franklin has been called “the most accomplished American of his age and the most influential in inventing the type of society America would become.” Franklin became a successful newspaper editor and printer in Philadelphia, the leading city in the colonies, publishing the Pennsylvania Gazette at age 23.

About

Relais Display is a lively and elegant sans serif typeface with a high stroke contrast. It combines the advantages of display and text fonts. Relais is our take on a sans-serif didone-esque Antiqua, combining strict aesthetics with a sophisticated style. At the same time, Relais is a real all-rounder: Originally intended for expressive headlines, it can be used for a wide variety of purposes starting at a size of around 11 points with good screen readability.

The design is a homage to magazine titles of the early 80s. It captures the charming elegance of the typography of the time and translates it into a balanced and contemporary typeface family. Drawn with attention to detail and equipped with an extensive character set, it is a versatile display font with a concise character.

Each font contains a total of around 780 characters and offers extensive language support. Relais is also full of typographic extras: lots of symbols, numbers, arrows and ligatures make this font a versatile tool for sophisticated design and playful typography.
