Ligature Type is a collaborative type & typography studio based in Berlin. We produce high quality retail and custom typefaces that go beyond style. What we really like to do is to convey a story or an atmosphere, to amplify ideas and make them visual. At the same time, our fonts live up to all you expect from a modern font, in technical and other regards. Our curiosity pushes us to ask extra questions, leading to specific solutions.
Alexander Rütten is a German typeface- and interface designer and partner of the Berlin based design studio Formsport. He studied graphic design at the University of Applied Sciences in Trier, concentrating on typography. After graduation he worked as a freelance graphic designer and later as an art director for several design agencies. In 2002 he moved to Berlin, where he worked mainly as a developer for interactive applications and as an editorial-designer. His typefaces are available with Linotype and FontShop International. In 2009 he won the TDC Award for his first typeface “Ginkgo” and again in 2011 for “Suhmo”. In 2010 “Ginkgo” was also nominated for the German Design Award.
Olivia Wood is a German-Canadian graphic designer and entrepreneur. After studying typography with Professor Andreas Hogan and New Media with Professor Franz Kluge in Trier she moved to Berlin. In 2002 she co-founded Formsport design studio with Alexander Rütten, concentrating on web and corporate design.
Relais Display is her first typeface and Easy Grotesk is her second, both released with Alexander Rütten in 2023.
